The recording session brought together Rohff and the singer Kayliah, who handled the refrain of "Qui est l'exemple?". Their duet sampled Lime's 1981 hit "Your Love", played at a lower pitch. The track found its place on La Vie avant la mort, the rapper's debut album, and was picked as the third single from it.

Late 2001 saw the release on a CD maxi, with a CD single following in February 2002. Buyers got a generous package either way, since both editions carried the album track "Miroir, miroir" alongside an instrumental version of the lead song.

Commercially the gamble paid off. The single reached number one in France and charted strongly in Switzerland and in Belgium's Wallonia region. It became Rohff's biggest hit and is regarded as his signature song. Sales kept accumulating for years afterwards: by August 2014 the single had moved 379,000 units in France, placing it 56th among the best-selling singles of the 21st century there. The 12" maxi edition also offered an a cappella take and a second song, "TDSI", in vocal and instrumental form.

Qui est l'exemple ? runs at 110 BPM, the tempo of pop, funk and disco-leaning dance. In classical terms it sits in moderato territory. A bar of 4/4 lasts 2.18 seconds, and a quarter-note delay is 545 ms. It is in Db major, Camelot 3B, which shares its notes with Bb minor and mixes cleanly with F# major and Ab major.
