Shinedown released "Second Chance" on September 9, 2008, as the second single from their album The Sound of Madness. Brent Smith told the crowd at Pointfest 22 that the lyrics were hard to write because they were about his mother and father and the day he said goodbye to them to go and try to become a man.

The video, directed by Ryan Smith, follows a teenage girl who dreams of becoming a ballerina while her parents fight. She leaves a note and runs away to a dance school, and her parents realize that letting her go is their second chance. It was shot on Anna Maria Island on the Gulf Coast of Florida, using local people and a local house.

The song reached number one on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart on December 27, 2008, and stayed there 10 weeks. It topped the Modern Rock chart on February 14, 2009, and the Adult Top 40 chart on June 20, 2009. On the Hot 100 it peaked at number seven, the band's first top 10 single. It was also the last number one that Casey Kasem played on American Top 20, which aired its finale on July 4 and 5, 2009.

Second Chance runs at 100 BPM, the tempo of mid-tempo pop, dancehall and indie. In classical terms it sits in andante territory. A bar of 4/4 lasts 2.4 seconds, and a quarter-note delay is 600 ms. It is in C minor, Camelot 5A, which shares its notes with Eb major and mixes cleanly with F minor and G minor.
