Audioslave released "Show Me How to Live" in June 2003 as the third single from its self-titled debut album. It reached No. 67 on the Billboard Hot 100, No. 2 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart and No. 4 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart.

Tom Morello breaks the solo up with a phasing, fluttering effect. He gets it by tremolo picking the high E string and combining his Dunlop Cry Baby wah pedal with a ring modulator. The song is built on heavy guitar and drum riffs.

Singer Chris Cornell made an unusual vocal effect of his own. He repeatedly struck his throat with the side of his hand while changing pitch. The band cited Mary Shelley's Frankenstein as an inspiration for the lyrics, including the line "nail in my head" in the chorus.

Show Me How to Live runs at 89 BPM, the tempo of boom-bap hip-hop, reggae and slow R&B. In classical terms it sits in andante territory. A bar of 4/4 lasts 2.7 seconds, and a quarter-note delay is 674 ms. It is in A major, Camelot 11B, which shares its notes with F# minor and mixes cleanly with D major and E major.
