John Rzeznik wrote "Slide" about a teenage Catholic girl who becomes pregnant, and about the conversation she and her boyfriend have over what to do. The verse "do you want to get married or run away" carries the argument. Explaining it on VH1 Storytellers in 2002, he said the song came from where he grew up, the east side of Buffalo, a blue-collar, strictly Catholic immigrant community with heavy religious and family pressure.

It was the first single from Dizzy Up the Girl, released in September 1998. In the United States it reached No. 1 on four Billboard charts: Adult Top 40, Modern Rock Tracks, Mainstream Top 40 and Triple-A. On the Hot 100 it peaked at No. 8 in February 1999, the band's third top-10 hit there.

It debuted at No. 1 on the RPM 100 Hit Tracks chart on October 19, 1998, only the third song to do so apart from the chart's first issue, and held the spot for a second week. Elsewhere it did less, peaking at No. 29 in Australia, No. 36 in New Zealand and No. 43 in the UK. Nancy Bardawil directed the video, which was partly filmed at the El Dorado Hotel on South Spring Street in Los Angeles.

Slide runs at 112 BPM, the tempo of pop, funk and disco-leaning dance. In classical terms it sits in moderato territory. A bar of 4/4 lasts 2.14 seconds, and a quarter-note delay is 536 ms. It is in Ab major, Camelot 4B, which shares its notes with F minor and mixes cleanly with Db major and Eb major.
