Röyksopp built "So Easy" around a sample from a 1960s cover of "Blue on Blue", the Burt Bacharach and Hal David song, recorded by the Swedish vocal group Gals and Pals. The sampled lyrics, "Blue on blue, heartache on heartache/Blue on blue, now that we are through", run through the track, which the Norwegian duo released as their first single in 1999. Only 500 copies were made and distributed on that original pressing, which also carried "The 64-Position" and "Fusion's Allright".
Svein Berge and Torbjørn Brundtland, childhood friends from Tromsø, had formed the group in 1998 during the Bergen Wave, and "So Easy" later found a place on their debut album Melody A.M., released in 2001 on Wall of Sound. Before that, the track reached British audiences through unusual channels. It appeared in displays between programs on Nickelodeon UK and Channel 4, and in television adverts for T-Mobile.
After those commercials aired, the single was re-released, this time with the group's hit "Remind Me" as the A-side and "So Easy" demoted to the B-side. The reissue paired both songs with remixes, including a Someone Else's Radio Remix of "Remind Me" and an eight-and-a-half-minute Ingeborg Mix by James Zabiela. Brundtland, reflecting on the attention, wondered whether the positive reactions meant the duo really had talent, or if it was just luck.
So Easy runs at 104 BPM, the tempo of mid-tempo pop, dancehall and indie. In classical terms it sits in andante territory. A bar of 4/4 lasts 2.31 seconds, and a quarter-note delay is 577 ms. It is in Bb minor, Camelot 3A, which shares its notes with Db major and mixes cleanly with Eb minor and F minor.
