In 1974 Grand Funk Railroad recorded "(She's) Some Kind of Wonderful" for the album All the Girls in the World Beware!!! It reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100 on February 22, 1975. It finished 1975 at number six on the Hot 100 year-end chart. Decades later, in 2004, it turned up on the fictitious radio station K-DST in the video game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
The song was not new. John Ellison wrote it and recorded it first with his R&B group Soul Brothers Six in 1967, when it peaked at number 91 on the Hot 100. The line "She's some kind of wonderful" had appeared a year earlier in "Too Busy Thinking About My Baby," first recorded by the Temptations. In 1968 the Fantastic Johnny C covered it and reached number 87.
Grand Funk's version is the best known of the four. The band had formed in Flint, Michigan, in 1969, and by the mid-1970s was playing packed arenas around the world.
