Van Morrison wrote and recorded "Someone Like You" for his seventeenth studio album, Poetic Champions Compose, released in 1987. The Northern Irish singer-songwriter cut the track in the summer of that year at Wool Hall Studios in Beckington, Somerset, with Mick Glossop working as engineer. The single reached number 28 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart in the United States, and in 2019 it climbed to number one on the Ireland radio airplay chart.
The ballad became a staple at weddings and in cinema, appearing in films such as Only the Lonely (1991), Prelude to a Kiss (1992), French Kiss (1995), One Fine Day (1996), Someone Like You (2001), Bridget Jones's Diary (2001), and American Sniper (2014). It also supplied the framework for "Have I Told You Lately", one of Morrison's most popular love ballads, which came out in 1989.
Morrison returned to the recording twice in 2007, when it appeared on the compilation Van Morrison at the Movies – Soundtrack Hits and in a remastered version on Still on Top – The Greatest Hits. His career had begun in the 1960s, and by the time of the song's release he had already spent decades performing, having started as a teenager in the late 1950s playing guitar, harmonica, keyboards and saxophone with Irish showbands.
