Lionel Richie was in the middle of one of pop's biggest winning streaks when he recorded "Stuck on You." His second solo album, Can't Slow Down, had reached number one on the US Billboard 200 and sold over 20 million copies worldwide, and it had already produced the chart-topping singles "All Night Long (All Night)" and "Hello" before "Stuck on You" arrived as its fourth single in June 1984, released through Motown.
The song marked a departure for Richie, who had first risen to fame in the 1970s as co-lead singer and songwriter with the Commodores. Where much of his earlier material leaned toward R&B, "Stuck on You" carried a country pop influence, and it counted as his debut in country music.
