Sun Is Shining

In 1999, more than two decades after Bob Marley's death, a remix of "Sun Is Shining" credited to Bob Marley vs. Funkstar De Luxe reached number one on the US Billboard Dance Club Play chart and number three on the UK Singles Chart. The track had first appeared on Soul Revolution Part II in 1971, an album produced by Lee Perry, and again on African Herbsman in 1973 before Marley re-recorded it for his 1978 album Kaya.

Despite its later popularity, the song remained a fairly unknown and seldom-performed number during Marley's lifetime. Only two live performances are documented, and both happened under unusual circumstances. The first came on 16 June 1978 at The Music Inn in Lenox, Massachusetts, a concert that had been rescheduled twice since 1976. Marley played an over 2-hour set, and "Sun Is Shining" opened it, reportedly included spontaneously because it had started to rain.

A little over a month later, on 23 July 1978, Marley performed an outdoor concert at the Santa Barbara Bowl. The song opened that show as well. Just before playing it, Marley introduced the performance by referring to Haile Selassie's birthday, which fell on the same day. Marley died from cancer in 1981, at which point the group disbanded.
