Franz Ferdinand had formed in Glasgow in 2002 and wrote "Take Me Out" the following year. Alex Kapranos said the idea came from watching a snipers' duel in the film Enemy at the Gates, which seemed to him a good metaphor for the romantic situations the band sometimes found itself in.

The band could not decide whether the verses or the chorus should be faster, so Kapranos proposed putting all the verses first, then slowing down for all the choruses. The change was recorded live at Gula Studion in Malmö, Sweden, with producer Tore Johansson. Johansson said the track had no editing beyond picking the best take. He used several echo effects to get a marching, industrial feel, like a big workshop.

Domino released it as the second single from their debut album in the UK on January 12, 2004, and in the US on April 12. It reached number three on the UK Singles Chart and on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart, and number 66 on the Hot 100. The Village Voice Pazz & Jop poll voted it best single of 2004, and Triple J listeners chose it as number one in their Hottest 100. Jonas Odell directed the video, which places the band inside a Dadaist animation.

Take Me Out runs at 104 BPM, the tempo of mid-tempo pop, dancehall and indie. In classical terms it sits in andante territory. A bar of 4/4 lasts 2.31 seconds, and a quarter-note delay is 577 ms. It is in E minor, Camelot 9A, which shares its notes with G major and mixes cleanly with A minor and B minor.
