Dr. Dre produced "The Next Episode" with fellow Aftermath producer Mel-Man, building the track around a sample of "The Edge," a 1967 recording by actor and musician David McCallum and producer David Axelrod that appeared on McCallum's album Music: A Bit More of Me. The song features verses from Snoop Dogg, Kurupt, and Nate Dogg, although only Snoop Dogg received a credit. Released in 2000, it was the third single from Dre's second studio album, 2001, and it was a sequel to "Nuthin' but a 'G' Thang," the pair's famous single from Dre's debut, The Chronic.
The single reached number 23 on the Billboard Hot 100. Its music video was set in a strip club, with strippers pole-dancing throughout, and included cameos from rappers Hittman, Warren G, and Xzibit.
Both Dre and Snoop Dogg returned to the song on stage many times in the years after its release. They performed it on the 2000 Up in Smoke Tour, and again on February 13, 2022, when it opened the Super Bowl LVI halftime show.
