Eric Stewart and Graham Gouldman wrote "The Things We Do for Love" during the sessions for 10cc's album How Dare You!, though the track found little favour within the band. Kevin Godley was blunt about it while recording was underway, telling Stewart he did not want to do any more material of that kind after hearing the song alongside Lol Creme. The two of them disliked the direction it represented, and it went unfinished at that stage.
The song eventually surfaced as a single in 1976, released by the English band 10cc after Godley and Creme had departed. It was the group's first release as a reduced lineup, and it later appeared on the 1977 album Deceptive Bends. Critics responded well to the record. Record World described it as a well crafted tune with a crisp pop sound, while Cash Box heard a strong Beatles influence combined with solid rock and roll and the luxuriant harmonies that had marked the band's earlier work. The single arrived from a band that had formed in 1972 around Strawberry Studios in Stockport, where Stewart, Gouldman, Godley and Creme had written and recorded together since 1968. By the mid-1970s the group had racked up five consecutive UK top-ten albums between 1974 and 1978, with Deceptive Bends among them.
