Corey Taylor was on tour with Slipknot in 2004, sitting in a European hotel room, when he started the song that became "Through Glass". He was suffering from food poisoning in Sweden and could not get up to change the channel from MTV Europe. What he saw there made him angry: act after act of what he called plastic music, more about clothes and cheekbones than about the songs. He wondered whether the singer-songwriter revolution had ever happened, and he wrote the song to call out the American Idol-type shows for making it hard for people who write their own music to get ahead.
Stone Sour released it on July 22, 2006, as the second single from Come What(ever) May. It spent seven weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart and reached number two on the Alternative Songs chart. After crossing over to pop radio it peaked at number 39 on the Hot 100. It remains the band's most popular song. It went 2 times platinum in Australia, Canada and New Zealand, platinum in the United States and gold in the United Kingdom.
The single cover shows the band's hometown of Des Moines, Iowa. Tony Petrossian directed the video, which included a cameo by Poison guitarist C.C. Deville.
Through Glass runs at 108 BPM, the tempo of mid-tempo pop, dancehall and indie. In classical terms it sits in moderato territory. A bar of 4/4 lasts 2.22 seconds, and a quarter-note delay is 556 ms. It is in Eb minor, Camelot 2A, which shares its notes with F# major and mixes cleanly with Ab minor and Bb minor.
