The first recording sessions for One by One were tense and unsatisfying. Foo Fighters stopped for a three-month hiatus, and Dave Grohl said he felt like he wasn't entirely himself during it. He also wasn't sure about the future of the band. Those feelings went into "Times Like These". The lyric "I'm a new day rising" refers to New Day Rising, an album by Hüsker Dü, one of his favorite groups.

The song is the fourth track on One by One and came out as its second single in 2003. After the album version finished its chart run, Grohl released a solo acoustic version. It did well on pop and adult contemporary radio. There were three videos. Liam Lynch directed the one that is mostly kaleidoscopic backgrounds, and Marc Klasfeld directed one on the Rainbow Bridge in Victorville, California, where people drop furniture, cars and a house behind the band.

The band played it with jazz pianist Chick Corea at the 2004 Grammy Awards. George W. Bush's re-election campaign used it that year without the band's knowledge. Grohl called that weird. He then joined John Kerry's campaign.

Times Like These runs at 72 BPM, the tempo of soul, trip-hop and half-time hip-hop. In classical terms it sits in largo territory. A bar of 4/4 lasts 3.33 seconds, and a quarter-note delay is 833 ms. It is in E minor, Camelot 9A, which shares its notes with G major and mixes cleanly with A minor and B minor.
