Torn

Scott Cutler, Anne Preven, and Phil Thornalley wrote "Torn" in 1991 as a solo song for Preven. It was recorded and performed live during that period, but no formal release followed until 1993, when Danish singer Lis Sørensen recorded it in Danish under the title "Brændt", meaning "burnt". Sørensen had received the song through producer Poul Bruun as a suggestion for her new album, and Elisabeth Gjerluff Nielsen wrote the Danish lyrics. The track appeared on her album Under stjernerne et sted and became a hit in Denmark. Cutler and Preven then formed the alternative rock band Ednaswap, which gave the song its first formal English-language release in 1995 as a single from their self-titled debut, following the single "Glow". Thornalley and Cutler produced that session.

A further cover arrived in 1996 from American-Norwegian singer Trine Rein, whose version reached number 10 in Norway and appeared on her album Beneath My Skin. The best known recording came from Australian singer Natalie Imbruglia, who covered "Torn" in 1997 for her debut album Left of the Middle. Produced by Thornalley and based on Rein's version, it was recorded in Kilburn, London, with David Munday on lead guitar, Chuck Sabo on drums, and drum programming from Henry Binns and Sam Hardaker of Zero 7. Nigel Godrich mixed it. The single sold more than four million copies worldwide and topped the charts in Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Iceland, Spain, and Sweden.
