Guitarist Allen Collins and vocalist Ronnie Van Zant wrote "Tuesday's Gone", the second track on Lynyrd Skynyrd's debut album. A live version appears on One More from the Road, the band's first live LP.
Producer Al Kooper, credited as "Roosevelt Gook," played bass, sang backup vocals and added orchestral strings on a Mellotron. Robert Nix of the Atlanta Rhythm Section played drums. Gary Rossington took lead guitar, Ed King added guitar fills, and Billy Powell played piano.
In his book Counting Down Southern Rock: The 100 Best Songs, C. Eric Banister regards the lyric as Van Zant's masterpiece.
Tuesday's Gone runs at 75 BPM, the tempo of soul, trip-hop and half-time hip-hop. In classical terms it sits in largo territory. A bar of 4/4 lasts 3.2 seconds, and a quarter-note delay is 800 ms. It is in A major, Camelot 11B, which shares its notes with F# minor and mixes cleanly with D major and E major.
