The drum fill that opens "Two Princes" came together almost by accident. Aaron Comess, the Spin Doctors' drummer, admitted in a 2025 interview that he could not remember how the intro developed, saying it just stuck around until the stars aligned during recording. The band tracked the song in the A Room at the Power Station in New York City, a space Comess called the best drum room in the world. Chris Barron had actually written the song a few years before the Spin Doctors formed, but the group waited more than a year of playing together before attempting it.
Epic Records released "Two Princes" to US radio in January 1993 as the second single from the band's 1991 debut album, Pocket Full of Kryptonite. It climbed to number seven on the Billboard Hot 100 and reached number three on the Cash Box Top 100. Overseas, it hit the top spot in Iceland and Sweden and landed inside the top 10 in 13 other countries, among them Australia, France, Germany and the United Kingdom. The song also brought the band a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group.
Two videos were made for the single, one in black-and-white, with Richard Murray directing the version that premiered in February 1992. Barron refused the lead role as stereotypical, so bassist Mark White played a man courting a diner waitress instead. A planned cameo from rapper Biz Markie never happened after he failed to show, and his bodyguard took part. Barron's hat in the clip came from a charity shop for $6.
