John Fogerty wrote "Up Around the Bend", and Creedence Clearwater Revival recorded it only a few days before their April 1970 European tour. It went on the album Cosmo's Factory.
Fogerty opens the song with a prominent, high-pitched guitar riff. The lyric has him telling of a gathering up around the bend on the highway and inviting the listener to join in. "Run Through the Jungle" was on the flip side, and the double-sided single climbed to number four on the Billboard Hot 100 in the spring of 1970. It was certified platinum for sales of over a million copies. In the UK it reached number three and was certified silver.
Elton John recorded a version early in his career. The Finnish band Hanoi Rocks took it to number four in Finland. A variation by Fogerty and Eric Church became the theme for Amazon Prime Video's coverage of the NASCAR Cup Series.
Up Around the Bend runs at 129 BPM, the tempo of house, disco and most club dance music. In classical terms it sits in allegro territory. A bar of 4/4 lasts 1.86 seconds, and a quarter-note delay is 465 ms. It is in D major, Camelot 10B, which shares its notes with B minor and mixes cleanly with G major and A major.
