At the 52nd Grammy Awards in 2010, "Use Somebody" by Kings of Leon won Record of the Year, Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal, and Best Rock Song. It was also nominated for Song of the Year. The song was the second single from Only by the Night. It entered the American and British charts on December 8, 2008, three weeks after the album came out.
A video followed a month later. Sophie Muller, who also directed the one for "Sex on Fire", mixed tour footage with Caleb Followill singing on a sofa in a penthouse suite above the New York skyline at night.
In the United States it reached number four on the Hot 100, the band's first top five hit there, and stayed on the chart 57 weeks. It became the fourth song to top the Mainstream Top 40, Adult Top 40, Alternative Songs and Triple A charts. It passed four million downloads by July 2013. In the UK it peaked at number two and ran 40 unbroken weeks on the chart before Michael Jackson sales pushed it off. It later returned for 20 more weeks. The iTunes EP added "Frontier City" and a CSS remix of "The Bucket".
Use Somebody runs at 68 BPM, the tempo of slow ballads, ambient and downtempo. In classical terms it sits in largo territory. A bar of 4/4 lasts 3.53 seconds, and a quarter-note delay is 882 ms. It is in C major, Camelot 8B, which shares its notes with A minor and mixes cleanly with F major and G major.
