Dimebag Darrell first played the riff for "Walk" during a soundcheck on the tour for Cowboys from Hell. The rest of Pantera loved it immediately, and the part became the foundation of a track that appeared on the band's sixth album, Vulgar Display of Power. The riff was played in a 12/8 time signature.
Vocalist Phil Anselmo explained the message behind the song as telling people to take their attitude and take a walk with it, keeping that behavior away from him. The target was friends who treated the band differently once they returned home from the Cowboys from Hell touring cycle. Anselmo said those people assumed success had gone to the band's heads, as if they carried a rock-star thing embroidered across their faces.

Wrestler Rob Van Dam also used it as his entrance music in Extreme Championship Wrestling.
