Dee Snider wrote "We're Not Gonna Take It" for Twisted Sister. He has named the glam rock band Slade and the Christmas carol "O Come, All Ye Faithful" as influences. Near the end, the song uses lines spoken by the character Douglas C. Niedermeyer in the film Animal House. Mark Metcalf, who played Niedermeyer, stars in the video.
The single came out in May 1984 with "You Can't Stop Rock & Roll" on the B-side. It reached No. 21 on the Billboard Hot 100, the band's only Top 40 single. It is their highest-selling single in the United States, certified Gold on June 3, 2009, for sales of over 500,000 units. In 1985 the Parents Music Resource Center put it on its "Filthy Fifteen" list for alleged violent lyrics, a charge Snider repudiated. Marty Callner directed the video. A disobedient boy, played by Callner's son, is playing Twisted Sister songs in his bedroom while his family eats dinner. His strict father, "Douglas C.", barges in and berates him. The boy declares in Snider's voice that he wants to rock, and the sound of his guitar blasts the father out of a window. The boy turns into Snider, and the band wreaks havoc on the family.
In April 2021 the Federal Court of Australia ordered Clive Palmer to pay $1.5 million in damages for copyright infringement over his use of the melody in a campaign.
