Sublime's "What I Got" was released to modern rock and college radio on July 23, 1996, after singer Bradley Nowell died that year, and it reached number one on the US Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart. It also peaked at number 29 on the Hot 100 Airplay chart, and in Canada it reached number two on the RPM Alternative 30 chart. In Iceland it reached number 19, and in New Zealand number 34.
Two borrowings sit inside it. The chorus is lifted from "Loving" by the reggae artist Half Pint, who is credited as a co-writer, and the melody and pacing of the verses is identical to the Beatles' "Lady Madonna". The song came from the American band's self-titled third album, released in 1996.
The video, shot after Nowell's death, was a collage of archive videos and photos of him, ending with his infant son Jakob, as a tribute. It showed Long Beach, California, where the band met their success, and live footage from a show at The Capitol Ballroom in Washington, D.C. Rolling Stone placed the song at number 83 on its 2008 list of the 100 Greatest Guitar Songs of All Time.
What I Got runs at 95 BPM, the tempo of hip-hop, R&B and reggaeton. In classical terms it sits in andante territory. A bar of 4/4 lasts 2.53 seconds, and a quarter-note delay is 632 ms. It is in G major, Camelot 9B, which shares its notes with E minor and mixes cleanly with C major and D major.
