Where Is My Mind?

During his years at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Black Francis went scuba diving in the Caribbean and found a tiny fish persistently following him underwater. That image sparked the lyric to "Where Is My Mind?", a song he brought to Pixies, the alternative rock band he fronted. Guitarist Joey Santiago supplied the guitar line, which he described as the first thing he tried, calling it a lazy arpeggio that instantly sounded strong and hooky.

Producer Steve Albini tracked the song during the Surfer Rosa sessions in late 1987, and it appeared as the seventh track on that 1988 debut album. Albini and the band described an open, try-it-and-see approach in the studio, and Francis later called the producer's attitude "cavalier" in a way that matched the group's naivety at the time. To capture a distinctive ambience on the backing vocals, Albini moved equipment into a tiled bathroom and recorded Kim Deal's shouted "ooh-ooh" there for natural echo, a technique the group also used on "Gigantic".

The song gained renewed popularity after appearing in the 1999 film Fight Club, and it went on to become the band's signature song, inspiring a multitude of covers and appearing in film, television, and video game soundtracks. Rolling Stone placed it at No. 493 on its 2021 list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. In 2023, members of the Pixies revisited the session details, including arrangement decisions and Albini's engineering choices, in an oral-history podcast about the making of Surfer Rosa.
