Noel Gallagher originally wrote "Wonderwall" under the title "Wishing Stone". In 1996 he told NME that the Oasis song had been written for Meg Mathews, his then-girlfriend and later wife, but after the couple divorced in 2001 he insisted it was never about her, saying the media had taken its meaning away and that it was really about an imaginary friend who would come and save a person from themselves. Liam Gallagher offered a different memory, saying it recalled the time he and his brother wrote notes and thoughts on the wallpaper of their bedrooms as kids, though he added that Noel decided to say it was about some girl instead. The final title came from George Harrison's solo album Wonderwall Music.

The recording plan was unusual at first. Gallagher wanted to capture the song on a ten foot wall outside Rockfield Studios, an idea that led to ladders and microphones worth thousands of pounds being arranged around the wall while sheep watched. That outdoor version was shelved, and Liam recorded his vocal in the studio instead during a two-week stint in May 1995. Owen Morris co-produced the track with Noel in half a day, using a technique known as brickwalling to intensify the sound.

Noel gave Liam a choice between singing "Wonderwall" and "Don't Look Back in Anger", and Liam took the former. Every member except bassist Paul "Guigsy" McGuigan played on the recording, with Noel handling bass himself, a decision that displeased Liam.

Wonderwall runs at 87 BPM, the tempo of boom-bap hip-hop, reggae and slow R&B. In classical terms it sits in andante territory. A bar of 4/4 lasts 2.76 seconds, and a quarter-note delay is 690 ms. It is in F# minor, Camelot 11A, which shares its notes with A major and mixes cleanly with B minor and C# minor.
