Rick Parashar produced, engineered and mixed "Would?" for Alice in Chains. Jerry Cantrell wrote it as a tribute to his friend Andrew Wood, the singer of Mother Love Bone, who died of a heroin overdose in 1990. Cantrell sings the verses and Layne Staley takes the chorus. Cantrell said Wood was a hilarious man, full of life, and that the song was also aimed at people who judge the choices of others.

It first appeared on the soundtrack to the 1992 film Singles, in which the band members make a cameo, and then on their second studio album, Dirt. Columbia Records sent it to US radio on June 8, 1992, and it peaked at number 31 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. In the United Kingdom, where it came out on January 11, 1993, it made the top 20.

Cameron Crowe and Josh Taft co-directed the video. It won Best Video from a Film at the 1993 MTV Video Music Awards. In 1996 the band played an acoustic version on MTV Unplugged. In January 2019, a trailer for the second season of The Punisher used the song, and the next week it reached number 15 on Billboard's Hot Rock Songs chart.

Would? runs at 99 BPM, the tempo of hip-hop, R&B and reggaeton. In classical terms it sits in andante territory. A bar of 4/4 lasts 2.42 seconds, and a quarter-note delay is 606 ms. It is in F# major, Camelot 2B, which shares its notes with Eb minor and mixes cleanly with B major and Db major.
