Shatek, who co-organized the soundtrack and produced the track, gave "X Gon' Give It to Ya" its beat when the song was pulled from the sessions for DMX's album Grand Champ in 2003. Written by DMX himself, the track was released as the lead single from the soundtrack to the film Cradle 2 the Grave that same year. It went on to become the rapper's most successful international single.
The song charted at number 60 on the Billboard Hot 100, number 30 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, and number 13 on the Hot Rap Songs chart. It also appeared as a bonus track on European releases of Grand Champ and later turned up as a hidden track on DMX's 2007 greatest hits compilation, The Definition of X: The Pick of the Litter.
Thirteen years after its release, the single found a second life. Its inclusion in the 2016 film Deadpool and its trailers, along with prominent spots in the film's marketing campaign, sparked a resurgence in popularity. Following the movie's release, the song reached number 23 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, beating its 2003 peak, while sales rose 403 percent to 26,000 downloads and streams climbed 104 percent to 2.6 million US clicks. The music video, directed by Joseph Kahn, had earlier earned a nomination for Soundtrack Video of the Year at the 2003 Music Video Production Association Awards.
