British trip hop group Olive released "You're Not Alone" in August 1996 as a single from their debut album, Extra Virgin. Written by Tim Kellett and Robin Taylor-Firth, the track initially made only a modest impression. Its fortunes changed the following year, when a remixed version was issued and climbed to number one on the UK Singles Chart in May 1997. The song went on to win an Ivor Novello Award in the category of Best Dance Music.

Singer Ruth-Ann Boyle brought a rich, smoky quality to the recording, while Kellett and Taylor-Firth underpinned her performance with swirling strings and breakbeat-styled percussion. Critics drew comparisons to Everything But the Girl, though some heard a more mainstream, classic-soul flavor in the group's approach. The Scottish Daily Record described the finished record as a hypnotic dance chart-topper, noting Kellett's previous stint as a keyboard player with Simply Red.

Three different music videos were filmed for the single. The first showed all three band members in spectral forms in a hotel room, while the second, made for the commercially successful remixed Radio Edit, was shot in France with scenes in a public toilet and beside a road lined with glowing car headlights. A third version, directed by Timothy White for the American market, placed Boyle and Kellett in moody urban settings. The song was later covered by the German trance producer ATB in 2002 and by Danish singer-songwriter Mads Langer in 2009.

You're Not Alone runs at 134 BPM, the tempo of techno, trance and big-room dance. In classical terms it sits in allegro territory. A bar of 4/4 lasts 1.79 seconds, and a quarter-note delay is 448 ms. It is in G minor, Camelot 6A, which shares its notes with Bb major and mixes cleanly with C minor and D minor.
