You Win Again

Barry Gibb came up with the melody for "You Win Again" in a dream, while his brother Maurice Gibb worked out the drum machine sounds in his garage. Written by all three Gibb brothers and performed by the Bee Gees, the song was produced by the siblings alongside Arif Mardin and Brian Tench. Warner Records released it on 7 September 1987 as the first single from the album E.S.P., the group's seventeenth studio record and their first release for that label.

The single marked the start of a comeback. It reached number one in the UK, Ireland, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Denmark and Norway, and topped the Eurochart for four weeks. Entering the UK chart at No. 87 in mid-September, it climbed to the top spot four weeks later and stayed there for a month, keeping George Michael's "Faith" from number one. With that mid-October 1987 peak, the Bee Gees became the first group to score a UK number one hit in each of three decades, the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, and it was their first UK chart-topper in over eight years. In the United States the song fared poorly, peaking at No. 75 on the Hot 100, possibly because of the lingering disco backlash that had followed the group since 1979.

The Gibb brothers received the 1987 Ivor Novello award for Best Song Musically and Lyrically, and the band earned a Brit Award nomination for Best British Group the following year. The single cover showed the brothers at Castlerigg stone circle near Keswick in England's Lake District.
