"Ants Marching" reached number 18 on the Billboard Alternative chart and on the Mainstream Rock chart too, and was considered a successful hit single. Dave Matthews Band released it in September 1995 as the second single from their debut studio album, Under the Table and Dreaming, which was certified platinum six times.
Dave Matthews wrote the music and lyrics in 1991. The American rock group had already put out a different, slightly longer recording of it on the earlier album Remember Two Things in 1993, which ran 6:08.
The singles carried different companions. The US CD single had the album version at 4:31, a live version at 4:45 and a live acoustic version at 4:19. One Australian CD single added "All Along the Watchtower", and the other paired the album version with "What Would You Say", an edit of "Typical Situation" and the live version.
Ants Marching runs at 113 BPM, the tempo of pop, funk and disco-leaning dance. In classical terms it sits in moderato territory. A bar of 4/4 lasts 2.12 seconds, and a quarter-note delay is 531 ms. It is in D major, Camelot 10B, which shares its notes with B minor and mixes cleanly with G major and A major.
