Dave Matthews said on VH1 Storytellers that he wrote "Crash Into Me" from the perspective of a Peeping Tom watching a girl at night through her bedroom window. At the Pinkpop Festival he described it as a nice song about sex, one that was begging for sex.

Dave Matthews Band, the American rock group formed in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 1991, released it on October 29, 1996, as the third single from their second album, Crash. It reached number two on the US Billboard Triple-A chart and number 30 in Canada, and it was nominated for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals at the 1998 Grammy Awards.

Dean Karr directed the video, which premiered on November 12, 1996. It showed the band members in a forest, dressed as forest dwellers and surrounded by dancers who performed interpretively around them. The group, known as a jam band, plays its songs differently in each performance, a practice that became a staple of its live shows.

Crash Into Me runs at 101 BPM, the tempo of mid-tempo pop, dancehall and indie. In classical terms it sits in andante territory. A bar of 4/4 lasts 2.38 seconds, and a quarter-note delay is 594 ms. It is in E major, Camelot 12B, which shares its notes with C# minor and mixes cleanly with A major and B major.
