Spears recorded her vocals for "...Baby One More Time" in May 1998 at Cheiron Studios in Stockholm, where half of her debut album was cut. The night before the session she stayed up late listening to Soft Cell's "Tainted Love", chasing the growl she wanted; she later explained she hoped her voice would sound kind of rusty. The first day went badly, as she was too nervous, so she went out that night and had some fun. Relaxed the following morning, she nailed the take. The track was produced by Max Martin and Rami Yacoub, with Martin also handling the mix, and guitar from Thomas Lindberg and bass from Johan Carlberg. Denniz Pop received a producer credit despite never attending a session, as illness kept him away and Spears never met him.
The song had already been turned down by the Backstreet Boys, TLC and the English group Five before it reached Spears, who felt excited on first listen and knew it would be a hit. Executives worried the line "Hit me" might condone domestic violence, so the title was changed from "Hit Me Baby One More Time" to its final form.
Jive released the single on September 29, 1998, when Spears was 16. It topped charts in more than 20 countries, sold over 10 million copies, and was named the greatest debut single of all time by Rolling Stone in 2020.
