In early 1998, Britney Spears traveled to Cheiron Studios in Stockholm, Sweden, where half of her debut album ...Baby One More Time was being recorded. She had originally imagined the record as "Sheryl Crow music, but younger [and] more adult contemporary", but went along with her label's choice of producers, who aimed the material at a teenage audience. Jörgen Elofsson wrote "(You Drive Me) Crazy", with production and additional songwriting by Max Martin, Per Magnusson and David Kreuger. Spears recorded her vocals there in March 1998, and Martin mixed the track at the same studio. Esbjörn Öhrwall and Johan Carlberg played guitar, Thomas Lindberg handled bass, and background vocals came from Jeanette Söderholm, Martin, Rami Yacoub and a group called THE FANCHOIR.

In May 1999, Martin and Spears went to Battery Studios in New York City to re-record the vocals, because a remixed version called "The Stop Remix!" was to appear on the soundtrack of the film Drive Me Crazy. The remix took its name from a moment in which Spears shouts "Stop!". Released on August 23, 1999, as the album's third single, it peaked inside the top ten in seventeen countries, reached number five in the United Kingdom and number ten on the Billboard Hot 100, and topped the charts in Belgium (Wallonia) and Iceland.

Nigel Dick directed the music video, in which Spears plays a dance club waitress performing a heavily choreographed routine with fellow waitresses. It premiered on MTV's Making the Video and featured cameos from Melissa Joan Hart and Adrian Grenier, stars of the film the song soundtracked.

(You Drive Me) Crazy runs at 103 BPM, the tempo of mid-tempo pop, dancehall and indie. In classical terms it sits in andante territory. A bar of 4/4 lasts 2.33 seconds, and a quarter-note delay is 583 ms. It is in C minor, Camelot 5A, which shares its notes with Eb major and mixes cleanly with F minor and G minor.
