"The Ballroom Blitz" by the British glam rock band The Sweet went to number one in Canada, number two in the UK and Australia, and number five on the US Billboard Hot 100. Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman wrote it. It appeared on the US and Canadian versions of Desolation Boulevard but never on a Sweet album in the UK, apart from hits compilations.
The idea came from a night on January 27, 1973, when the band were playing the Grand Hall in Kilmarnock, Scotland, and were driven offstage by a bottling. Less than five months later, on June 11 and 12, they recorded the song at Audio International Studio, 18 Rodmarton Street, London. The single came out in September 1973.
Its opening guitar riff and drum patterns bear a similarity to a 1963 song by Bobby Comstock called "Let's Stomp".
Ballroom Blitz runs at 116 BPM, the tempo of pop, funk and disco-leaning dance. In classical terms it sits in moderato territory. A bar of 4/4 lasts 2.07 seconds, and a quarter-note delay is 517 ms. It is in C major, Camelot 8B, which shares its notes with A minor and mixes cleanly with F major and G major.
