Sweet wrote "Fox on the Run" themselves. It was the first single with an A-side written by the band rather than by producers Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman, and their 14th single overall. "Fox" is slang for an attractive woman, and the lyrics are apparently about one of the band's groupies.

The English glam rock band recorded it twice. The original, first recorded in 1974 and produced by Mike Chapman in association with Chinn, was on the European version of the album Desolation Boulevard. In 1975 the band recorded and produced a more pop-oriented rendition as a 7-inch single. That one became the familiar version. It was included on the Capitol Records version of the album.

The single returned the group to the UK top ten after "Turn It Down" failed to make the top 40. In Australia it was the best charting single of 1975, with six weeks at number one. Decades later, the song's place in the trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 sent it to number one on the iTunes Rock Chart in late 2016.

Fox on the Run runs at 128 BPM, the tempo of house, disco and most club dance music. In classical terms it sits in allegro territory. A bar of 4/4 lasts 1.88 seconds, and a quarter-note delay is 469 ms. It is in E major, Camelot 12B, which shares its notes with C# minor and mixes cleanly with A major and B major.
