The dog barks on "Been Caught Stealing" were not planned. Perry Farrell had adopted a needy dog named Annie from a shelter and brought her to the studio rather than leave her at home. He was singing in the booth with headphones on when Annie got excited and started barking. Her barking ended up on the track. Rolling Stone called it the best use of dog barks since Pet Sounds.

Warner Bros. released the song in November 1990 as the third single from Ritual de lo Habitual. It was the band's biggest hit and spent four weeks at number one on the US Billboard Modern Rock chart. Casey Niccoli directed a video in which people, band members included, shoplift in a grocery store in Venice, California. It won Best Alternative Video at the 1991 MTV Video Music Awards.

The song also appears in the 2004 video game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, on the fictional radio station Radio X. In September 2023, Billboard ranked it number 62 among the 100 most successful songs in the history of the chart then called Modern Rock Tracks.

Been Caught Stealing runs at 103 BPM, the tempo of mid-tempo pop, dancehall and indie. In classical terms it sits in andante territory.
