"Mountain Song" was the first song Jane's Addiction ever wrote. They wrote it in 1985, before the band had picked a name. An early recording is on the soundtrack of the 1987 independent film Dudes, starring Jon Cryer, and again on the 1997 compilation Kettle Whistle. The band re-recorded it for their debut studio album, Nothing's Shocking.
The 1988 single used only the Nothing's Shocking version. Its B-side, "Standing in the Shower... Thinking", also came from the album. It did not chart and was less successful than the promotional single "Jane Says". The single was reissued on April 18, 2009 to promote the box set A Cabinet of Curiosities.
There are two videos. The second, directed by Perry Farrell with live footage by Modi Frank, was shot at the Scream in Hollywood on August 19, 1988. MTV banned it for nudity. A censored version with black bars was made for Headbangers Ball and 120 Minutes. The band released the unedited video on the videomentary Soul Kiss on Valentine's Day 1989. The first video was made by Andrew Doucette from Warner Bros. footage without the band's involvement. They disliked it and shelved it. It was shown mostly in Europe and Australia.
Mountain Song runs at 82 BPM, the tempo of boom-bap hip-hop, reggae and slow R&B. In classical terms it sits in andante territory. A bar of 4/4 lasts 2.93 seconds, and a quarter-note delay is 732 ms. It is in A major, Camelot 11B, which shares its notes with F# minor and mixes cleanly with D major and E major.
