Scott Storch produced "Candy Shop" during sessions for 50 Cent's second commercial album, The Massacre, drawing influence from Middle Eastern music and sampling The Salsoul Orchestra's "Love Break". Fat Joe later claimed in an interview with XXL magazine that he helped produce the track alongside Storch, saying the world did not know they worked on it together. According to Fat Joe, Storch called him dozens of times to ask whether he wanted to use the beat, and after learning that 50 Cent wanted it, Fat Joe told Storch to go ahead. When writing the song, 50 Cent said he attempted to be as sexual as possible from a male perspective without being vulgar or obscene.

The track, which features Olivia, was released as the second single from The Massacre in 2005 through Interscope, Shady, Aftermath, and G-Unit Records. It debuted at number 53 on the Billboard Hot 100 and climbed quickly, reaching number two in its fourth week before hitting number one in its fifth week, where it stayed for nine straight weeks. It became 50 Cent's third number one single and also topped the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, Hot Rap Tracks, and Rhythmic Top 40 charts. In Europe, it reached number one in Austria, Belgium, Germany, and Switzerland.

Critics were divided. Several reviewers saw the song as a retread of 50 Cent's 2003 collaboration with Lil' Kim on "Magic Stick", with one author calling it nearly identical to that track. At the 2006 Grammy Awards, it was nominated for Best Rap Song but lost to Kanye West's "Diamonds from Sierra Leone".
