A demo of "Faint" on the Underground 9.0 fan club release has Mike Shinoda rapping different lyrics, with only some backing from Chester Bennington.
The finished song is the seventh track on Meteora and came out as its second single on June 9, 2003. It went to US radio on July 1. On the Hot 100 it peaked at No. 48 in its eighth week. On Modern Rock Tracks it held No. 1 for six weeks, the band's third number-one there, and it reached No. 2 for two weeks on Mainstream Rock Tracks. Elsewhere it hit No. 21 in Canada, No. 15 in the UK and No. 25 in Australia.
The song came out as two singles, "Faint 1" in blue and "Faint 2" in a brownish green, with different track listings. A promotional sampler went to street team members and some members of the fan club. Mark Romanek directed the video in downtown Los Angeles. Fan club members made up the audience, shot mostly from behind the band. Floodlights turn them into silhouettes. Their faces show only in the final chorus. In 2025, "Faint" became the band's fifth song to pass one billion Spotify streams.
Faint runs at 136 BPM, the tempo of techno, trance and big-room dance. In classical terms it sits in allegro territory. A bar of 4/4 lasts 1.76 seconds, and a quarter-note delay is 441 ms. It is in E major, Camelot 12B, which shares its notes with C# minor and mixes cleanly with A major and B major.
