In the End

Mike Shinoda's rapped verses carry much of "In the End", the fourth and final single from Linkin Park's 2000 debut album Hybrid Theory, where it appeared as the eighth track. Reviewers singled out the song's signature piano riff alongside Shinoda's vocal prominence, and the track became a commercial success, reaching number two on the US Billboard Hot 100 in March 2002, the band's highest peak on that chart. A sleeper hit, it arrived on radio on September 11, 2001 and was released commercially the following month.

Chester Bennington, the band's lead vocalist, admitted he initially disliked the song and did not want it on Hybrid Theory. His opinion did not stop it from becoming the band's signature song. It was later remixed on Reanimation as "Enth E ND", and ahead of the 20th anniversary reissue of Hybrid Theory, a demo version was released on October 1, 2020 as the re-release's second single.

The music video, directed by Nathan Cox and the band's turntablist Joe Hahn, placed the group in a fantasy setting inspired, according to Shinoda, by Princess Mononoke. Filmed partly in a California desert but performed on a Los Angeles studio stage, it used heavy CGI to show the band atop an Egyptian-looking statue, with water pipes drenching the members during the finale. The video won Best Rock Video at the 2002 MTV Video Music Awards.
