Family Affair

Dr. Dre built the instrumental for "Family Affair" in the studio on September 13, 2000, working with a bass player and a keyboard player. His engineers filed the early version under the title "Fragile" for record-keeping. The track had originally been intended for Rakim's planned Aftermath album Oh, My God, but Rakim passed on it and the album never came out. Near the end of 2000, Dre sent the instrumental to Mary J. Blige, who had heard it and wanted to write to it.

Blige recorded vocals over the music using lyrics penned by her brother Bruce Miller, Camara Kambon and Mike Elizondo, and she shares writing credit with all of them as well as with Dre. On January 10, 2001, a near-final but non-lyrical portion of "Fragile" was transferred from digital to analog format and renamed "Family Affair". At Dre's suggestion in late May or early June 2001, Blige added a bridge to the track, crafting its lyrics alone. A remix featuring Jadakiss and Fabolous appeared on the US CD single.

The single topped the US Billboard Hot 100 for six weeks in late 2001, giving Blige her first and only number one on that chart. It also reached number one in France and hit the top 10 in 14 other countries across Europe and Oceania. Dave Meyers directed the music video, which was filmed at a nightclub and showed Blige dancing in a series of outfits.
