The lyrics for "Real Love" began with Mark Morales writing in the studio, singing the first few lines in a way that hinted at rap. Cory Rooney liked what he heard and built a bridge and melody around it, and the two went on to write and produce the track for Mary J. Blige's debut album, What's the 411? Released by Uptown and MCA on July 28, 1992, it was the album's second single and sampled Audio Two's 1987 song "Top Billin'". Rooney later explained the song's meaning, saying Blige was being taken advantage of by industry figures at the time and that "Real Love" described her situation.
The single became Blige's first top-10 hit, peaking at number seven on the US Billboard Hot 100. It also topped both the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Rhythmic charts, and the RIAA certified it Gold on November 4, 1992. Marcus Raboy directed the music video.
The track drew praise from reviewers, with Jonathan Bernstein of Spin complimenting its "irresistible bounce". Rolling Stone placed "Real Love" at number 327 in its 2021 list of the 500 Best Songs of All Time, and Pitchfork ranked it number 39 in its 2022 list of the 250 Best Songs of the 1990s. Blige is set to produce a Lifetime movie based on the song.
