Drummer Scott Phillips started "Higher." According to Mark Tremonti, it grew out of Creed improvising on stage in their earliest shows, when they had only a handful of songs and restless audiences. Vocalist Scott Stapp would goad the others into making one up on the spot. Phillips began a drum part. Tremonti then entered with the chord progression. The band recorded every show, and after reviewing the tapes they decided a song could be assembled from the improvisations.

Stapp and his friend Steven Harang wrote the lyrics about lucid dreaming. They came from a recurring dream in which Stapp was hunted and shot by an unknown gunman. After he studied lucid dreaming, he could escape.

Creed released "Higher" on August 31, 1999, as the lead single from Human Clay, and gave it away as a free digital download a month before the album. It peaked at No. 7 on the Hot 100 on July 22, 2000, after 57 weeks on the chart, and topped both the Modern Rock and Mainstream Rock charts. Ramaa Mosley directed the video at the Hard Rock Cafe in Orlando, using more than 300 extras. Stapp has said he cringes at it, and at the leather pants.

Higher runs at 155 BPM, the tempo of hard techno, punk and fast rock. In classical terms it sits in allegro territory. A bar of 4/4 lasts 1.55 seconds, and a quarter-note delay is 387 ms. It is in D major, Camelot 10B, which shares its notes with B minor and mixes cleanly with G major and A major.
