"My Own Prison" first appeared on Locals Only, a compilation from WXSR-FM. After the album came out, the title track played on a locals-only radio show in Tallahassee, and a station in a nearby Georgia city began spinning "Pity for a Dime." Creed was asked to play there and drew five to six thousand people. Scott Stapp remembers hearing the song for the first time on the radio at Daniel Tremonti's house, with some Florida State University students visiting.

Creed's singles were not sold in the United States at first, so it could not chart on the Hot 100. It peaked at No. 54 on the Hot 100 Airplay chart in March 1998 and at No. 2 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, where it sat for nine weeks behind Days of the New's "Touch, Peel and Stand."

Stapp said he woke up around 3 or 4 a.m. from a dream and wrote it all down. He called Mark Tremonti, and they finished the song in about 30 minutes. The band demoed it at producer John Kurzweg's home studio in Tallahassee and at Criteria Studios in Miami for $6,000. After Wind-up Records signed them, Ron St. Germain remixed the album at Long View Farm in Massachusetts. Creed has played it over 302 times live.

My Own Prison runs at 140 BPM, the tempo of dubstep and trap counted in half time, and hardstyle. In classical terms it sits in allegro territory. A bar of 4/4 lasts 1.71 seconds, and a quarter-note delay is 429 ms. It is in Bb major, Camelot 6B, which shares its notes with G minor and mixes cleanly with Eb major and F major.
