Sully Erna had a little time before Godsmack started writing its next album, and the director Chuck Russell was a fan. Russell wanted to use "Voodoo" in The Scorpion King, but the song was a bit dated and Erna did not want to redo it. He submitted new music instead. The band received a script and a trailer and wrote about the main character, Mathayus.
Erna wrote "I Stand Alone" and David Bottrill produced it. Robbie Merrill said the producer Mudrock helped push Erna's vocal range and tried ideas the band had not tried before. Erna said the song is about the Scorpion King as a big, masculine presence with a hidden sensitive side, isolated because he was hurt in the past.
It went to radio on February 1, 2002, as the lead single from the film's soundtrack and returned on Faceless the following year. It reached No. 1 on the Mainstream Rock chart and No. 20 on Modern Rock, and went gold. The Brothers Strause directed the video at a cost of roughly $750,000. The song earned two Grammy nominations, for Best Rock Song and Best Hard Rock Performance. Erna said they came as a surprise. The band had released no album in 2002. The track, he said, kept the band afloat while it worked on the next record.
