Godsmack formed in Lawrence, Massachusetts, in 1995. Its self-titled album closed with "Voodoo," the third single from it. Sully Erna and bassist Robbie Merrill wrote the song.
It peaked at No. 6 on Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks chart and No. 5 on the Mainstream Rock chart. As the last track listed on the album, it leads into about two minutes of silence and then a hidden track called "Witch Hunt." The song alone runs 4:39. With the silence and the hidden track the full length is 9:03. The band later made a sequel, "Voodoo Too," for its fourth album, IV, in 2006.
Dean Karr directed the video in 1999. It shows witches performing a ritual with swords, with the band playing throughout in a corn field. A naked gorgon dances as part of the ritual, and zombies come out of a lake and wander through the woods. Laurie Cabot and members of her coven at that time appear in it.
Voodoo runs at 120 BPM, the tempo of house, disco and most club dance music. In classical terms it sits in allegro territory. A bar of 4/4 lasts 2 seconds, and a quarter-note delay is 500 ms. It is in Bb minor, Camelot 3A, which shares its notes with Db major and mixes cleanly with Eb minor and F minor.
