Joey Ramone wrote "I Wanna Be Sedated" between 1977 and 1978, and he called it a road song. Their first manager, Danny Fields, worked the band to death, with about 360 days a year on the road. One Christmas in London the city shut down, and Joey shared a hotel room with Dee Dee Ramone with nothing to do but watch The Guns of Navarone.
Marky Ramone told a different story in 2015. He said Joey wrote it after being treated in a hospital for burns on his face and throat, when an inhaler used to clear his nostrils exploded. Marky played drums on the track.
It first appeared on Road to Ruin in September 1978 and was the B-side of the UK single "She's the One", released on September 21, 1978. It came out as a single in the Netherlands in 1979 and in the US in 1980 on RSO Records, from the Times Square soundtrack. Bill Fishman directed the video in September 1988 for the compilation Ramones Mania. The band sit at a table reading and eating corn flakes while the hallway behind them fills with nuns, acrobats, clowns and monsters. The film was sped up, with the band moving very slowly while the crowd moved normally. A young Courtney Love plays the bride. Alice Cooper said Joey admitted the song resembled Cooper's 1972 song "Elected".
