The US single of "Sheena Is a Punk Rocker" by Ramones came out in July 1977 and reached number 81 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song also turned up on copies of the second pressing of the band's album Leave Home, where it replaced the track "Carbona Not Glue". The song and its B-side, "I Don't Care", were remixed and re-released on Rocket to Russia.
In the UK it arrived first, in May 1977, and reached number 22. Joey Ramone wrote it, drawing on the surf rock and bubblegum pop of the early 1960s. The Sheena in the title is the comic-book character Sheena, Queen of the Jungle. Joey described the idea as a savage jungle girl brought to the modern day, a mix of Sheena with the primal side of punk rock. He called it the first surf and punk rock teenage rebellion song.
It was one of the first songs to use "punk rock" in its title and lyrics to name a subculture. NME ranked it number 5 among its tracks of the year for 1977.
