Liam Howlett wrote and produced "Out of Space," building it around a sample of Max Romeo's 1976 track "Chase the Devil" alongside lines from Kool Keith's rap on Ultramagnetic MCs' 1988 song "Critical Beatdown." The Prodigy released the result in November 1992 through XL Recordings as the fourth single from their debut album Experience. It climbed to number five on the UK Singles Chart, becoming the band's fourth top 20 entry that year, and was later certified platinum by the BPI in June 2024.
The song's music video, directed by Russell Curtis, placed the band raving in a rural setting and included footage of ostriches. Keith Flint appeared in a raver's outfit of white overalls, a face mask and fluorescent gloves, sniffing Vicks VapoRub. MTV Europe gave the video heavy rotation in March 1993, and in June 1995 it was a Box Top on the British channel The Box.
"Out of Space" remained a fixture in the Prodigy's live sets and ranked among the most successful tracks of their early period. DJ Magazine placed it in its "Top 100 Club Tunes" list in 1998. In 2005, Audio Bullys remixed the track for the "Voodoo People / Out of Space" single, released with the greatest hits compilation Their Law: The Singles 1990–2005.
