Mixmag placed "Poison" on its 2020 list of "The Biggest Drops in Dance Music", and Time Out ranked it number 26 in its 2022 rundown of the 50 best songs of the nineties. The track had originally come out on 6 March 1995 through XL and Mute, the fourth and final single from The Prodigy's second album Music for the Jilted Generation. Written by Liam Howlett and Maxim Reality and produced by Howlett, it gave the band a number one in Finland, a top-five placing in Norway, and chart entries in Sweden and Switzerland.

Maxim Reality, a newer addition to the group, handled the vocals, and Billboard noted the record marked the band's first move into hip-hop territory. The drums were built from samples of Skull Snaps' "It's a New Day", the Winstons' "Amen, Brother", and Bernard Purdie's "Heavy Soul Slinger". The single's packaging ran with a rat poison theme, showing a box of poison on the front and a decomposing rodent on the back, while the official remix carried the name "Rat Poison".

Walter Stern directed the music video, which placed the band in a basement location that turned into a mud-bath by the end, with Keith Flint mud wrestling among his bandmates. The clip was a Box Top on The Box in March 1995 and later appeared on an episode of Beavis and Butt-head. The song also found its way onto film soundtracks, featuring in The Jackal in 1997 and End of Days in 1999.

Poison runs at 103 BPM, the tempo of mid-tempo pop, dancehall and indie. In classical terms it sits in andante territory. A bar of 4/4 lasts 2.33 seconds, and a quarter-note delay is 583 ms. It is in B minor, Camelot 10A, which shares its notes with D major and mixes cleanly with E minor and F# minor.
