Julian Casablancas wrote "Someday", released on August 5, 2002, as the third and final single from the Strokes' debut album, Is This It. It reached number 17 on the US Modern Rock Tracks chart and number 27 on the UK Singles Chart.
The band formed in New York City in 1998 and has kept the same lineup from the start: Casablancas, guitarists Nick Valensi and Albert Hammond Jr., bassist Nikolai Fraiture and drummer Fabrizio Moretti. Their debut EP The Modern Age, released in early 2001, set off a bidding war among minor labels, and they signed to RCA Records. Is This It followed that summer.
Roman Coppola directed the video, which turns a game of Family Feud into a contest between the Strokes and Guided by Voices, with Richard Karn appearing as himself. Slash, Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum, the guitarist, bassist and drummer from Guns N' Roses and Velvet Revolver, also turn up. Pitchfork ranked the song number 53 on its list of the 200 best songs of the 2000s.
Someday runs at 108 BPM, the tempo of mid-tempo pop, dancehall and indie. In classical terms it sits in moderato territory. A bar of 4/4 lasts 2.22 seconds, and a quarter-note delay is 556 ms. It is in A major, Camelot 11B, which shares its notes with F# minor and mixes cleanly with D major and E major.
